Don’t hide the hope

Dangermuffin enjoys an exalted reputation for their groovy, rootsy style, but Dan Lotti, Steven Sandifer, and Mike Sivilli dig a bit deeper into the soul and mind on their new album Olly Oxen Free than even their biggest fans might have expected.

“We’re not aiming for anything specific,” says lead singer and acoustic rhythm guitarist Lotti. “We’re just going for what we enjoy.”

After working up new material over the last two years, the trio recorded the 13-song Olly Oxen Free in January with engineer Majeed “MJ” Fick at Truphonic Recording in West Ashley. The collection follows their well-received 2010 album Moonscapes. If the previous album demonstrated a solid configuration of musicians and a mess of cool guitar licks, the more mature Olly Oxen Free finds them at the peak of their creativity and confidence.

Dangermuffin to release new album, play the Farm on Saturday

Folly Beach-based band, Dangermuffin, will be touring in support of their third and latest album ‘Olly Oxen Free’ and will be kicking things off in Charleston.

This Folly Beach, S.C.-based trio are clearly at peace with themselves and their career, while keeping up a constant pursuit of truth. The seeds they’ve planted at major festivals around the nation grow as fast as the mileage on their odometer, yet they dream and sing of home with a yearning passion. Most strikingly, the band’s musical execution remains refreshingly simple, belying a staggering lyrical and thematic depth behind each individual song.

The follow-up to 2010’s Moonscapes, which produced tracks that received generous airplay on both SiriusXM’s Jam On and Outlaw Country stations, Olly Oxen Free demonstrates heightened ambitions and a refined, road-polished outfit ready to take on even more.

Dangermuffin will be having a CD release party at the Music Farm on Saturday, May 12th. Tickets to this all ages show are$10 in advance and $12 at the door. Doors open at 8 p.m. and music begins at 9 p.m.

A prog-grass band featuring two members of moe.,a few traveling favorites, two days of outdoor performances and plenty of talented valleys bands are on the agenda for this year’s Down by Downtown Festival.

The third annual DxDT is set for April 18-21 at eight downtown Roanoke venues and an outdoor stage behind the City Market. Folly Beach, S.C., band Dangermuffin (playing at Martin’s Downtown as I write this) and Richmond’s Former Champions will be the featured acts on that stage April 20-21. Allen Thompson, from Nashville via Roanoke, brings his band to the April 20 outdoor stage action.
